2005 - 2006 Make learning real for your students…let them see beautiful landscapes, hear birds call, smell wildflowers, touch aquatic critters and laugh with delight as they experience the real Florida… 3rd
– 6th grades -
Watershed and Wildlife Walk
This 3-hour hiking trip
offers students a unique opportunity to explore the CREW Trails near the
Corkscrew Marsh, the headwaters of the Western Everglades and Estero Bay
ecosystems. After a brief map orientation to the watershed, students hike
grassy trails through pine flatwoods, seasonal ponds, oak/palm hammock or
to the marsh edge looking for wildflowers, animals, tracks and more. Trail
activities are designed to connect students to the theme of watersheds as
important areas for people and wildlife. 4th – 6th grades - Marsh Trail Art Workshop This 3-hour trip combines hiking with art and literature by having students create and use a field journal. At various locations along the trails, students experiment with drawing, painting, and writing about the natural beauty that surrounds them, in the tradition of Aldo Leopold. Activities are designed to help students improve observation skills and develop a greater appreciation of the watershed through the arts. ($3.00 per student fee for materials) High School (9th - 12th grades) - Biodiversity and/or Fire Ecology Make your environmental science classes REAL! Come to CREW to do
hands-on data collection and explore research methods in a permanent
forest density plot set up in
collaboration with FGCU. Real science in real Florida! Trip activities
include learning vegetation mapping techniques, taking population samples,
and developing researchable questions from observations. Discussion and
evidence of the impact of fire in Florida’s ecosystems are explored.
